Consumer Financial Protection Bureau officials are seeking to monitor four out of every five U.S. consumer credit card transactions this year — up to 42 billion transactions – through a controversial data-mining program, according to documents obtained by the Washington Examiner.
A CFPB strategic planning document for fiscal years 2013-17 describes the “markets monitoring” program through which officials aim to monitor 80 percent of all credit card transactions in 2013.

Uh huh.
Why?
'cause they can?
Better question is: "Monitor for what?"

Huh, except for my shotgun, my last three purchases of something have been with cash. However, somehow, I still think they know what I got.

It all depends, when I run credit cards there is no description for the merchandise when I process the transaction. They have no idea what my customers are buying.

If its made payable to "Modern Defensive Measures", you can bet its red-flagged.

VM, all they're going to know is the vendor where you spent the money and the amount you spent. The CC transaction does not contain information on *what* you bought.
Sure, if you're buying at "Buds gun shop" it's probably firearm related, but buy at Academy and it could be a number of things.
Regardless of the BO - some large private entity is going to have a list of your transactions - vendor and cost.. I don't care if it's VISA, MC, or BO... It's in a database somewhere.

It may be but what does it really tell them? It gives an amount and a date then they can try and figure out whether I sold a reloading press, rifle, handgun, emergency food supply, bullets, hunting blind, knives, optics etc. etc. This really gives them no info they can use other than an amount spent.

Same here, they have no clue what it's for.
Besides, if they REALLY wanted to know, they could have the ATF swoop in and grab all the 4473s.
If their credit card transaction monitoring scares you from making certain kind of purchases, then "they" have won, haven't they? Something to think about.

For political purposes. This is not a partisan statement as I believe the use of governmental resources against political enemies is decades old. The current administration, however, seems to have taken it to a higher invasive and blatant level. The Nixon White House had an "enemies" list but I believe it was mostly limited to other politicians and high level opposing figures. Now, those lists include individual citizens like some of us on the forum. Through technology and the willingness to use it in this matter, the lists of enemies and actions against them are growing exponentially.
I predict that within two years, they will drop all pretext of using any of this to fight terrorism. It will be solely in place for Federal government enforcement purposes. The amassing of data for the Obamacare alone is breathtaking and if they force the physicians (by threatening withholding payments) to expand the data gathering into social areas as they are now beginning, it will get even worse.
The same forced compliance that we've seen in the EPA, etc will be used against each of us. If you don't answer the gun related questions your doctor asks, your healthcare will be affected. And by then, it won't matter which party wins the election. Once the bureaucracy is fully cranked up, it turns into its on perpetual motion machine.
