This article was on Policeone today. The victims own attorney states that the the police were probably within their rights as quoted below. This appeared to be based on the complaints of neighbors in New York. I am the 1st to defend my brothers in controversial stuff that the general populace doesn't get, but come on man

Why not knock on the guys door and ask him to remove the sign and educate him where he can legally display them? Instead his photo goes viral promoting more anti 2nd beliefs from LEOs.
“If the sign was close enough to public property, then [the officer was] within their right,” acknowledged Gibson’s lawyer, Richard Bombardo.
Somers Town Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy claimed that the signs were in fact on public property, and were removed to comply with town ordinances.
“The town does not allow signs in the right of way,” Murphy said. “The police chief had received numerous complaints from neighbors and it was determined that the sign was posted in the right of way.”

If they were on public property, the police may not have known who had posted them and who to contact.

If it was me I would just be happy they didn't cite me. I assume there was nothing on the sign that indicated who it was that posted the sign so maybe the cops didn't want to knock on doors accusing people to locate the culprit. In houston it's well posted that in both city and county it's illegal to post on the right of way so here I don't feel like it would be an issue here.

In Plano they have a regular truck that drives around on Friday - Sunday looking for garage and yard sale signs posted in the right of ways. These usually have an address on them, so they collect them and then issue the resident a ticket for placing the sign.

Yea, Plano is pretty aggressive about yard sale signs.
As you're aware, yard sale signs are not protected speech. They can't take down political sign, although they may (in some cases) be able to restrict political signage related to elections and limit it to reasonable dates.

Most who oppose Second Amendment rights for the common people aren't big fans of First Amendment rights of the coomon people either. Look at Piers and his fellow travelers.

In the original story it sounds as if this is on the edge of his property so it should have been clear who put the signs there. Solve the problem is how I work vs. just enforcing stuff all the time. It works better for most.

Gibson’s lawyer, Richard Bombardo, told FoxNews.com that they are currently having his property surveyed to be certain that the signs were not on the public right-of-way, which, though on Gibson's property, would be restricted for signage.
“If the sign was close enough to public property, then they were within their right,” Bombardo said to FoxNews.com. “But if it was solely on his property, that’s where the issue is.”

Any bets on how many years he has paid taxes on the "public" property where the sign was posted?

Here in Houston, we are required to maintain and therefore control the property in front of our ROW line including the sidewalk and the curb.
Can't say that I ever remember anyone removing a sign that I place in front of my property. If they did I would be just as upset.
