Any caveats or gotchas with purchsing handguns at a gun show?

Caveats?

You don't have to fill out the 4473 form if you are buying from an individual (not an FFL).

Many of the big boys (Bachman Pawn, etc) give discounts for cash at the gun show.

You get to fondle lots of different guns before you buy.

Gun shows are fun!

From what I have seen most dealer tables list their cash price and charge from 3%-5% extra for credit card transactions.

And don't bother telling them they can't do that! Their response would probably violate the 10YOD rule.

Just accept that's the way it is.

When buying a new gun, you can count on the factory if you have a problem.

If you buy a used gun from one of the larger, regular dealers, you can usually expect assistance if the gun had a serious problem when they sold it to you.

But in other cases and especially when buying from an individual, you better have enough savvy to spot problems with revolvers and semi-auto's before you buy them. It is truly caveat emptor!

The reason for the cash discount is because the companies that supply the CC machines and services charge 3-5% for each transaction. (my better half is opening another business and looked into CC)

Many places will not charge the fee on Debit cards, so if you find something you want and don't have the cash on you you can go that route.

Didn't Visa have a "same as cash" guarantee at one point? Is that still around, and does it apply to Visa branded debit cards?

IIRC, if you had a receipt showing the surcharge, you could just send it in and they'd refund it and take it up with the merchant themselves.

The first time a merchant tried to add 3% to my sale at a gun show....I sat down and called the credit card company. Visa told me that they were not allowed to do it.

I was asked to leave the table and the people went and got a police officer when I responded that I would when I completed my telephone call. I just sucked it up and walked away from the table when it appeared I was about to be escorted.

It is VERY common at every show for the vendor to charge extra for credit cards. I know that does not make it right....but apparently the penalty for doing so is very widely ignored.....
