Felons and firearms. So what exactly is this Code saying.. ?

For 5 years after the sentence has been discharged you can't have a gun and after that you can only have possession of a gun at home. Also illegal to be in possession of a firearm within 5 years after completion of sentence for a class A family violence conviction. An then there is possession of a firearm if under a restraining order for family violence unless a cop

There's no good reason but there's a lot of bad reasons that would probably get the thread locked.

I have heard of departments that "allowed" a cop with a Domestic Violence midemeanor conviction to "check out" his sidearm at the start of shift every day, and turn it back in before he went home.

Personally, I think the whole thing is bogus. That is to say, if someone's too dangerous to have a gun, they're too dangerous to drive or walk the streets. It doesn't matter if they're a cop or not. The whole DV thing is bogus, too; either something is an assault (felony deserving jail time) or it's not. This wishy-washy pseudo middle-of-the-road thing is just a ploy to disarm more more folks under color of law, and to run up stats for the local district attorney's office.

Just my opinion. I am not a lawyer, but I can guarantee you there's enough folks eager to achieve convictions that if you or I try turning my opinion into practice, they'll be happy to ruin your life in court, so please don't do it.
