Ode to Academy

Did not gouge ammo prices.
Gun prices cheaper than others' sales.
Academy, yay!

Gander mountain just posted in their weekly ad that their SALE price for the S&W M&P 15-22 is $500. Academy's REGULAR price on this rifle is $460 and I just picked up one at an Academy's sale for $399. Bass Pro sells this same gun for $530. Cabela's sells it for $500.

As long as you show up at 8:00 AM, you'll get the ammo you need, even during the most dire days of the ammo shortage. The price did not go up, either, unlike Cheaper than Dirt, which priced gouged during the ammo shortage.

Academy is also 2nd Amendment friendly, unlike Dick's sporting goods, which cancelled pending rainchecks on AR-15's after that shooting last december.

I gave up on GM during the first ammo shortage. Was standing at the counter when the manager took WWB ammo out of a Walmart bag and marked it up 300%.

I also figured out that Academy has the over all best price on ammo. I like how they respect gun owners by putting the ammo out unlocked so we can actually read the ballistics info on the box. You can also buy more than 3 boxes. They only apply that rule to certain ammo at certain times , unlike WM.

I hate Dicks unSporting Goods. Not only is the ammo locked up but you can not even see it to see what they have or do not have. Then the unSalesman get sassy when you try to inquire. I'll never go in that unStore again!

Is Academy stocking .22 LR enough that you don't have to show up before 8.00AM on a weekday morning yet?

I tend to avoid Gander Mountain. I try to comparison shop as much as possible (there is an Academy across from Gander Mountain in Houston on Hwy 290 & 19060). I have NEVER found a cheaper price on anything at Gander Mountain vs Academy.
Plus - Academy is a Texas company. :txflag:

I agree with the OP. I'm a supporter of Academy.

Agreed on all counts. Once they had a sale on bulk 9mms (pre Obama bullet bubble) to compete with Academy but Academy was still cheaper. They do have gunsmith services though.

When I first moved here from CA last summer, I stopped by an Academy store to get some real magazines. I looked over their ammo offerings, and discovered I had more ammo in stock than they did.

Maybe things are better now.

You no longer have to show up at 8 am. I showed up at 8:15 and was able to buy a bucket of 1500 rem golden bullets. They were sold out by 8:30, though. At least the large bulk packs are available again. During the height of the shortage, I was standing in line outside of the store for 40 packs of .22lr.

:iagree: +1 for Academy. My only complaint, the one nearest me doesn't have a very large firearms section for handguns. Have to go to a different store sometimes to find what I am looking for in stock..

I was at our NW Austin Academy store two days ago. They had lots of SD ammo in most calibres, but slim to none target ammo. I didn't see any .22 ammo.

I was in my local Academy this past weekend. They had about every caliber of handgun ammo in stock. The prices were high but no higher than other places. It was nice to be able to look through ammo choices for a change.

No 22LR... :cryin

Well if other calibers are generally more in stock, its a matter of time now until the .22LR start coming back, he types hopefully...

It sounds dumb but I have over 80K rounds in ammo and only have a thousand rounds of 22 LR. I got caught off guard on that one.
