Do to the lower temperatures, not sure this would work with lead, but I still found it fascinating.

I may very well try this sometime.

Also found all the people moaning and whining about cruelty to red ants amusing.

P.S. You are probably right about using lead. I wonder what he used to melt all that aluminum.

One thing I would like to caution anyone trying this. If you pour molten metal into wet material [or put wet material into molten metal] you can get splattering of the metal and easily get burned.

Aluminum would flow better and is far less likely to deform the nest structure. I'm pretty sure that either aluminum or lead will still deform the ants.

YES, I saw this done a while back and some of the ones I looked at had tunnels going off to the sides with chambers at their ends.
Like fingers from the main part out maybe a foot or so in all directions.
Very interesting. I'm sure different type of ants make various shapes under ground.

They mentioned that some of the chambers were used for wastes, some for dead ants, and for food storage of some kind etc....

Ps...I have looked into making a way to melt aluminum at home. There are many vids on YouTube making these. I wanted to melt coke cans and other scrap aluminum to store ingots for future use or use when aluminum prices were much higher.
I just cut up a 14' aluminum flat bottom boat and took to local scrap yard and got $29 for the whole thing.
Not worth my time...They always want to give you dirty metal prices no matter how clean it is or not having any other metal with it......!!!!!

Ingots are easy to store.
