WASHINGTON — Sen. John Cornyn won the endorsement of the National Rifle Association today, a big coup given that his chief rival in the primary, Rep. Steve Stockman, is such an outspoken gun rights advocate.

With Cornyn's long history of supporting gun owners, I wouldn't describe this as pulling off a coup. Anyone who may consider supporting Stockman needs to look at his history. He's from Michigan and served as my U.S. Rep. for one term, until he was defeated by a pro-gun, liberal Democrat. (This was before redistricting twice.) His only claim to fame is that he defeated Jack Brooks when Brooks voted for the Clinton assault weapon ban. Brooks had served in Congress for over 40 years and had an A+ rating, until Clinton strong-armed him into casting a vote that brought his career to an end. Stockman lasted one 2-year term. How he got elected again is puzzling.

Stockman may be more vocal about 2A, but Cornyn has always been strongly pro-2A. Some folks may have other reasons to dislike Cornyn (even heard multiple references to him as a RINO on a FB discussion

), and he's not Ted Cruz. But from a purely gun rights perspective, what's not to like about a high-ranking incumbent Republican US Senator with an A rating from the NRA?
Texas has a very strong pro-2A Senate contingent with Cornyn (the minority whip, second highest ranking Republican behind Mitch McConnel) and Cruz (media darling/villian). If it ain't broke ...
Some brief background on his stances on various gun issues.

I believe in the
"Dance with the one that brung ya!"
political strategy.
Cornyn has supported the 2nd.
He is running for reelection.
I am supporting him.
The meaning of the term RINO seems to have expanded.
It used to mean a Republican that voted for the leadership and it's rules but voted against nearly every Republican sponsored bill.
Now it seems to be applied to any politician that doesn't vote the way a Texas Conservative Republican should vote on every bill.
Your mileage may vary

I don't like the RINO label as Cornyn is obviously a Republican and voting with the leadership.
I don't like the leadership and want to see more vocal and real support for smaller govt and lower spending. It doesn't make him a RINO, but maybe just not conservative enough or not libertarian enough.

Any thought of supporting Rep. Stockman in this election went out the window for me this morning, when I came across this story in the Daily Mail...

Reports like this challenge me think extremely hard before I decide to support any incumbent. The 2nd Amendment is just one, allbeit very important, of the primary issues on which I base my decision to support.

You may not like Cornyn, but I think its obvious it is best for Texas and our country for him to be in the senate.

I think Cornyn is the best choice for 2A and my overall views. You will never find someone you agree with 100% in politics, so in a 2 man race you have to take the one that fits you better and is the lesser of the evils.
As my Momma used to say, 'Sometimes you just have to take a little bad along with the good.'

while Cornyn will eventually end up with it, no doubt. I'm still not happy with him right now, he's spent a bit of his time throwing Ted under the proverbial bus and I don't appreciate that. And I'm not sure I will vote for him in the primary....I don't know I've got almost a year to decide. I'll see how he behaves until then.
