Do any of the folks here use them? If yes, do you recommend a brand/style? Have any of you had issues with the gun sock causing the gun to get pits or rust? Any other issues to watch out for?

Today I was forced to clean up my gun safe. Too many years of just piling new stuff in on top of the older stuff.

My gun safe has reached capacity levels that are requiring my long guns be lined up closer together. I'm not to worried about my synthetic "black" guns. It is my hunting rifles and shot guns with the pretty wood stocks I am worried about. I noticed my Sako took a small scratch on the stock from another gun whacking it. What to do. I cannot afford another safe, so that option is out.

I've used the Midway branded silicone impregnated socks for several of my wood stocked hunting rifles that I only take out once/twice a year for a couple years with good results. Like you, a couple of mine are packed fairly tight in the back of the safe and they seem to protect against nicks/scratches pretty well. As far as pitting, so long as you're running some method to heat/dry the air in the safe I assume you're ok; so long as you're not putting the guns away wet that is.

I've used the gun socks before on rifles stored behind the seat of my truck. They work as advertised, no rust on guns stored for over a year behind my seat.

I saw the word socks and this is what I thought of

I use old socks they work fine. Generally Gold toe brand.

I also use the silicon-impregnated rifle/shotgun socks and have been very happy with them

I use Allen's silicon impregnated. I have my guns stacked tightly in the safes and they prevent little dings when I have to unstack them to get to one. WalMart has them for a decent price, but you can shop around. I caught a case of 12 Allens on Ebay for a really good price, but they were not long enough for shotguns. I bought two 6-packs of Allens 52" socks from Wally World online for 25 bucks each with free shipping for pick up at the store.

They are thicker than others I've seen and used previously, silicon impregnated and available in different sizes.

They work great and are thicker than the standard "sock" type. Every gun in my safe has one. I pulled all the organizational stuff out of the safe so I could stack more inside.

Thanks everyone.I just ordered the Allen gun socks off amazon. I don't know if I overpaid but I don't like going to stores. I bought two that were about 7 dollars each but they are wide enough for the two hunting rifles I have with scopes on them. I also bought a six pack of the 52" socks for 27 dollars. They are only 6" wide but that will work for my shotguns.



Oh... to address a post above... I have the "golden rod" dehumidifier. It is basically a long heater tube that sits at the bottom of my safe. So far no moisture. My real concern was if somehow putting my rifles in a sock would cause moisture to build inside the sock. Thinking about it, that was an unfounded fear. AKA...dumb...LOL.

All of my long guns are in Midway socks due to safe crowding. I keep two pails of "Damp Rid" desiccant in a safe that is not opened between May and October and have seen no problems with either metal or wood. The pails need to be emptied when the safe is opened when we return home in October...for sure.

My concern about the "Golden Rod" would be if it got too hot and depleted all of the moisture from the air in the safe. I think that some humidity is good for the wood so it doesn't crack.

After reading all of these posts, I realize that I am sockless. I'd better get to K-Mart quickly.

I have no humidistat in the safe but have access to such measurement devices. I might just check it out over the weekend. I open the safe often enough that I am not sure it would ever be an issue in my situation. I have humidifiers on both my heating systems so even in the season we most dry out our indoor air, my home stays above 40%.
