I bought this knife that flips out at the touch of a button, about 2 1/2 inch blade. I bought it on base today from a concessionaire. Now hubby is telling me it could be illegal to carry. Is it illegal in Texas? I know he can't take it to school of course.

IIRC as of September 1, 2013 the law changed to say switchblades were now legal in Texas.

The only way a 2.5 inch blade is illegal is if it has both sides sharpened (like a dagger).

Switchades and assisted opening knives are legal (as mentioned above).

Can't tell you how many times when I was in school that a teacher asked to borrow my knife for something. Sharpened many a pencil with that knife too. Janitor always knew which seat I was at because of all the wood shavings he would sweep up from my whittling.

It seemed to be ok if they were selling it on base, but I'm not going to take any chances.

One of my son's teachers has a knife he carries. He has shown it to them and used it to open things in class. I am not sure if that's legal, but I'm ok with it. Nowadays you can't even draw guns or knives on your notebooks. My cousin, several years ago got sent to the principal by a concerned female student. He had been doodling fantasy weapons. His parents had to come pick him up. Yes, times sure have changed.

it's probably ok when he's with y'all. Esp. for him to learn how to carry one.

lol Years ago I was set to board a SW airlines flight and they would not let me board with handcuffs I just purchased, but they allowed my dad through with his knife.

Unless the district has a rule about it, it's OK. The law that prevents students from carrying knives at school is part of the Education Code, enacted by our very own state legislature, and is aimed specifically at "a student", and has no effect on adult staff or faculty. You'd be surprised at how handy a Swiss Army knife can be in the classroom, especially my computer lab.

Ah the good ol' days. When I was in high school every young man had Buck knives on their hip and no small number of the ladies. We tuned the springs on those suckers so a little thumb pressure and a sharp flick of the wrist and "click"! Often times there would be sharpening parties after lunch evidenced by the patches of missing arm hair or strips of thinly cut paper in waste cans.

Not in the slightest. Most of my friends carried a SAK or BSA variant in high school.

Automatic knives are now legal in Texas but not in every city. I believe San Antonio has a law against them. I actually checked with my local police department before buying one. There are also restrictions about mail order purchases.

SA has an ordinance against lockblades with blades under 5 1/2 inches in length. Texas proscribes the carry of knives with blades over 5 1/2 inches. Seem to be a spot for blades exactly 5 1/2 inches.

Me too. I haven't flown since 2000. I had one on my belt then.
