Recently thru some trading I acquired a nice (I think) compound bow. I bought a target yesterday and played around with it outside yesterday.
My 14 yo and 12 yo sons were extremely interested. They are both small framed so no chance of operating the 70lb pull of the bow I was using. They are both excellent shots with both rifle and handguns and I believe they would both excel in archery.
So I found this bow online at Cabelas and wanted to see what you guys thought about it. It has a wide range of adjustment which would allow them to grow with it. Also has high customer ratings. I would need to buy two as the settings would be too different for the boys to use the same one - this makes cost a factor would like to be out of the store with acc at or under $400 per bow (total $800).

I would start them with inexpensive recurve bows but I also like starting new shooters with an inexpensive "plinker" instead of a high end target gun so take my advice with the salt appropriate to your situation.

My son has used one very similar for about five years now. He's maxxed out the poundage because he is now 17, 6'3" & 235 lbs. The draw is a little short for him and he could use one with more lbs but he likes it. It's served him well as he's killed a deer each season he's had it. I keep telling him it's time to pass it down it down to his sister and get him an adult bow. He keeps asking me why because it's working.

This is the exact package I ended up getting both of the boys about 45 min ago at Cabelas. They ended with a much nicer setup than mine - I'm jealous

Congrats on the bows jmra, but don't you need a backup bow in case one breaks? The wife and I both shoot those bows and really like them.

Built this backstop for the boys. Didn't take long for them to start hitting bulls eyes. Mom is going to have to pick up some more apples - the ones she just bought all have holes in them for some strange reason.

Check your local big box lumber stores for styrofoam insulation. Two 4'x8' sheets of 3/4" cut in half so that you have 4 sheets of 4x4 stacked together works very well to put behind that hay. I shoot 70 lbs and it will still stop the arrows. Good thing is it costs only about $25 and gives a little more backstop room for mistakes.

Thanks, I'll check into that. Most of their shots are hitting a target cube that sits on top of the front stack of hay.

That's a fine bow to start. Just make sure they're interested in archery or bow hunting before you spend too much. After the bow comes arrows, release aids, etc. My first bow was a 45# dayco recurve, killed my first bow deer with it 33 years ago. Bows sure have come along way since then.
