Qestion for Insurance Person

Is uninsured/underinsured re auto insurance necessary if one has good health insurance? I am only asking in terms of injury to person, not repairs to vehicle. In other words, does your health insurance normally take care of injuries in an auto accident?
Thanks

It's hard to give firm advice in a forum such as this with limited info. I also can't give specific advice for E&O purposes since I am not your agent of record. With that said, yes, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage will cover both property damage to your vehicle and bodily injury. Health insurance coverage would also pay for your medical expense. You would need to read your policies to determine which one would be primary.

Thank you mojo for the response. The only reason I asked here is I don't have much time (this is a renewal and I may go with a different company) I will call my health insurance co. Mon. and hope they are open on the holiday.

I have found that the cost of uninsured/under-insured motorist is usually so cheap it isn't worth not taking it. Where you really gain cost savings is in your coverage levels and deductibles for comprehensive and collision.

There are quite a few uninsured motorists in Texas.
The other advantage - and maybe this is Your Mileage May Vary by insurer, if involved in a hit-and-run, I've been told I can claim under uninsured/underinsured, which may have a different deductible.
I don't know of any law that requires it regardless of your underlying health insurance.

I am very happy I have under/uninsured motorist coverage on all of my vehicles.
2 times, no just once, one of the cars on my policy were hit by uninsured motorists.
Both times, if I did not have the addendum on my policy, all costs would have come out of my pocket and not the person who hit me.
The insurance company goes after them, while they also take care of fixing your car, so you are not stuck out.
it is well worth the additional few dollars every 6 months to have it, and SOOOO costly not to have it!
Another benefit, if you have to use the uninsured / under insured policy, you still have to pay a deductible, but only 1/2 (at least that is how it works with Allstate)

This is definitely a coverage that can be extremely important to have and most people won't realize it until they need it. Unfortunately, many agents will not include this coverage or Personal Injury Protection (for bodily injury only) when they are having to compete for business based solely on price.
Another thing to be aware of, many agents will also quote state minimum liability limits in order to keep the premiums down. We do not sell policies at state liability minimums. If we had a customer that absolutely demanded that low of a limit and we were going to sell them a policy, we would have them sign a very plainly and bluntly worded acknowledgement that they are buying insufficient state minimum limits and they agree to hold us harmless when they have a claim. More than likely though, we would send them down the road.

Can I get uninsured motorist insurance if I don't have collision coverage? I'm willing to pay the piper if I wreck my truck but want protection for the more likely event of some unlicensed, uninsured jerk crashing into my truck.
