I would really like to beat someone to death with some AR questions that google isnt helping with and confusing me more. I would ask the questions here, but it is a lot i guess.

I can seriously say I have never been involved with something with more opinions and options than building an AR. IF anyone has a lot of time and patience please PM me. Thanks in advance.

Ask away....if we're on here, we have little better to do.

My answer will usually be a Colt, BCM, or DD basic rifle for your first one.

You are asking someone here to become your exclusive personal trainer. Perhaps someone will "bite", but the purpose of a User/Enthusiast Forum is to openly share information and ideas that all members can benefit from.

That only happens when your questions are asked & answered in this public place.

You are going to have to take the time to type out your questions in a PM just as much as posting them here.

On the other side of the coin, if someone responds by spending their time typing out their thoughts, they might as well benefit the entire community.

MSRP on the DD was a little out of the range I wanted to spend, but I fell into a smokin' deal and couldn't pass it up.

My first one was Daniel Defense. I still own it and love it. I put ever accessory known to man.

I just bought a Colt 6920 and I have not added anything except a tactical light. It is quickly becoming my favorite. I guess because it is so much lighter than the DD.

As said above, "ask away" with the questions. I have a lot to learn and you may ask a question that will help me or others.

I'll be "that guy" and suggest you build your own. It's really fun and easy to do.

Plus you'll learn a lot more than buying off the shelf.

Yeah it sounded kind of dumb when I wrote it, but it seemed easier to work with one person versus reading a lot from others.

Anyways here it goes.

First of all I am not made of money so buying a prebuilt is out of the question right now. In fact, partly my money should be going to other things like ammo for the guns I have, better belt, holsters, etc.

However, I have NO AR at the moment and want one. I want to build a quality one. Everyone has their brands but some things surely can be purchased for less by someone else.

Did I go wrong with the LPK? I kept reading after buying it that cmmg and colt have higher standards for their lpk? Aside from triggers are they not all the same? No one I see gives details on their LPK so it is next to impossible for me compare one to another.


I plan to get a spikes st-2 buffer and trying to decide on a buffer spring. I have looked at some with Chrome Silicon. I have looked at the one at Larue Tactical.

How about tubes? really a need for one that is almost 100.00? I know to get mil spec and 6 position. I either will have an MOE, CTR or go heavier when I get my 12-13" rail system.

I try and shop Palmetto State Armory, but they give no specs on some of their items like springs etc

I mean to say I am not just working on my lower, I am buying upper parts too if I find them cheap. BCG I am looking for is Nickle Boron full auto. That is better than Chrome lined right? Is a barrel nut a barrel nut unless rails are involved? If I want M4 feed ramps (which I do) they have to be in what? barrel and the barrel extension right?

BTW I have been looking at all the AR websites. I know more now than I did a month ago. for example WHAT m4 feed ramps are, Buffer weights etc.

I get that quality can come at a price. I am not expecting to not spend money. However, I don't want to buy one thing when I should have spent 10.00 more and got something else.

My end game is very light weight .300 blk I can put a light on. Aiming for 5 pounds with nothing but the rifle lol

I built my first AR dirt cheap using parts from Essential Arms in the late 80's. I was way more into AK platform rifles and just wanted to have an AR for the heck of it. The EA parts seemed kinda cheap, and compared to the Colt and Sig AR rifles I have now, they seem really cheap. That being said, the rifle has never had a hiccup in the almost 30 years I have had it. It shoots reasonably accurately, doesn't jam, and I take way worse care of it than my good rifles, so I guess it has been pretty good. If you are looking for some budget parts I would have to recommend Essential Arms. I suppose that their prices may be a lot higher now, but I never hear anyone talk about them so I suspect they are still a fringe manufacturer.

Spike's Tactical is good to go. That price looks pretty good to me too.

Thanks Doc for all your help. I looked at what you suggested than stumbled upon that somehow.

I will say this, and I am sure I wont get sympathy from experienced builders, furniture for these things are ridiculous!
