On March 29, 1973, under the watchful eyes of North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong observers, a Boing 707 with the last American combat servicemen left Ton Son Nhut Air Base in Saigon, leaving behind 159 Marine guards at the downtown embassy, 50 Military Attaches, and some 800 Americans assigned to the Truce Observation Force, who would depart Saigon in the next two days.
Also leaving on an American aircraft were the last 67 Prisoners of War released by the North Vietnamese, leaving Hanoi on a C-141 bound for Clark Air Base in the Philippines. Over 1,000 American servicemen are listed as Missing In Action.
America's military will not suffer it's last casualty in Vietnam until April 30, 1975 when two Marine Guards are killed on Embassy grounds as the Viet Cong and the NVA are taking Saigon.
