A man tried to gain entry into a woman's home by pretending his car was broken down, while armed with a knife. Woman answered the door prepared. Bad guy shot dead. Homeowner will not be charged.

I wonder what would have happened had she not opened the door. Good for her for going to the door armed and suspicious, but women don't have to be polite and open doors to strangers. I've started doing that since living stateside. They're pretty surprised I'm not opening the door, just raising my voice loud enough for them to hear "NO THANK YOU!"

A wireless intercom makes the communication a lot easier and makes them worry more since they won't know what you look like or where in the house you are.

The intercom also conveys the idea that you might have given the home invasion risk a bit of thought. If they think that one through, they may realize that there's a good chance that the party may not go the way they'd like if they try to crash in. The prospect of searching an unfamiliar home for someone who may be armed and lying in wait behind cover in a tactically advantaged position is not something that's relished by the average home invader.

There are advantages to making bad guys worry enough at the get go so they decide to go bother someone else. It's less aggravating and less expensive than having to deal with them after they've gotten froggy.

Good shoot and good article. Properly identifies the intruder as a "young man" as opposed to a "teenager". Also appears that investigators are on the right page.
