I was discussing government work with a friend. He mentioned building a gun lock up at the social security administration offices.

I went what?

Apparently if you bring a gun to the SSA they confiscate it. But they have to do something with it. IE can't have the guards just put it in a drawer or something. So they have special little gun lock boxes for the task. They are then put in a rack in a special room for that purpose.

I said so you get the gun back when you leave? He said no. The guards don't get to keep them either. I assume a SSA swat team picks the gun up and who knows after that.

Sold at auction? Probably not.

So anyone been to the SSA offices. I'm assuming they are posted and are not like city offices.

Would n't be easier to tell you to put it in your car?

The one here in Paris isn't posted. But since they are a federal building it's not required isn't it? If it has a gun lock up I don't know if it has one or not.

Could they legally seize your firearm without charging you with a crime?

I'm sure that if you protest too much, they could charge you with a crime.

It technically IS required to post in order to convict you of the crime:
18 USC 930:
(a) Except as provided in subsection (d), whoever knowingly possesses or causes to be present a firearm or other dangerous weapon in a Federal facility (other than a Federal court facility), or attempts to do so, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 1 year, or both.
...
(h) Notice of the provisions of subsections (a) and (b) shall be posted conspicuously at each public entrance to each Federal facility, and notice of subsection (e) shall be posted conspicuously at each public entrance to each Federal court facility, and no person shall be convicted of an offense under subsection (a) or (e) with respect to a Federal facility if such notice is not so posted at such facility, unless such person had actual notice of subsection (a) or (e), as the case may be.
