Hey,

I told a friend of mine that I was looking at a SIG and he had some strong negative feelings about the quality that they're putting out. So, I figured I'd solicit input from y'all. Solid manufacturer or are they having issues these days?

Depends on what you're looking at. I've got a short extractor P226 and a short extractor P220SAO that have both been flawless (assuming mecgar magazines on the P226). AFAIK, it's the same with my buddy's long extractor P229. The P238s had some issues early on, but AFAIK they were quickly solved. The P938s had major reliability problems when it first came out, but I haven't heard anything about them recently, so I don't know if that model's been fixed. The P250s had problems when they first came out, but I don't recall if those were issues with reliability or quality. I think I remember hearing about something minor with the first run of P224s, but take that with a large grain of salt. AFAIK, the P227s are solid.

There's some debate as to whether or not the new, long external extractors are less reliable than the older short style. I *think* the consensus is that there might've been some QC issues with the earlier batches of those extractors, but since none of mine have that style and my friend isn't having problems with his, I haven't really kept up with it much.

Also, nobody outside of Sig knows why their match guns all use internal extractors. Those, at least in their 9mm guns, do seem to have long-term reliability issues. I assume their thinking is that match guns won't be used in life-or-death situations, so some unknown-to-me benefit of internal extractors out-weighs the risk of an occasional FTE.

Anyway, the trend here is that whenever they introduce a new model, or change something significant, the quality is not what you'd expect from Sig. AFAIK, all the issues do get eventually fixed, though.

Ask this question again over on The Sig Forum, they know more about Sigs than I do. Also, if a guy named Bruce Gray responds, whatever he says... it's right. He used to be one of Sig's gunsmiths back when nobody questioned their reliability. The man really knows his sig stuff :-)

They are a great firearm manufacturer. Some people are just fans of a particular brand and everything else is garbage in their mind.

Ive owned a p230. Biggist waste of firearm money I have spent. Jammed on everything I put in it except ball. Called sig and customer service was also very poor. I can deal with a bad firearm that has a lifetime warranty on it, if the company actually did as they should.
Do a google search on sig warranty problems. Nuff said

The last couple of years I have heard of a few Qc problems but nothing more then any other manufacture. Reminds me of when glock had problems with the initial 4 gen roll out. People starting saying glock is #rap. I can think of several manufactures that are worse then sig but only a few who might be better. Just my 2 cents.

I think one thing is true for sure. You don't have to pay sig prices for a quality firearm that is reliable.

I like them, always have. Own a P239 as my carry piece, a P938 as my pocket piece, a P226 as my nightstand piece, and an M400 as my "oh crap, it's going down" piece. I used to carry a P229. All have been reliable, though the P938 took some time to get used to without limp wresting it.

I like many other makes/models also. There are Sigs that I don't like, the P250 for example.

I'm a big proponent of trying before you buy. Go to a range and try them out, not just the Sigs, but others. Pick the one that fits your style, carry method, grip, and price.

Pfft.. Sigs are not good at all.

Get a Hi-Point.

My daily carry is a SigSauer SP2022. I've had only one minor issue with it, and that was solved with a good cleaning (some lint got in under the grips and restricted the hammer from falling far enough forward).

Their QC has gone down the drain the past several years. Lots of Leo agencies cancelling/returning pistols be of issues. I'd be leary spending as much as they charge for a crap shoot. If you do want one get a old Germany made one

I'm a super new to shooting, but hubs just bought a Sig, so thought I'd share my experience.....

He got a 1911 TACOPS, and I actually used this for my CHL test yesterday. I chose that gun because it is so accurate and super easy to shoot/handle. Other than a couple of user errors (like I said, I'm a noob ), the ONLY issue we have had so far is with the rear sight moving. He easily fixed that with some Lok Tite and an Allen wrench. That sight isn't going anywhere now!!!

I'm a fan of Sig, and I've been looking into their pocket carry options for myself. Not only do I love the way the 1911 shoots, I also think its a beautiful firearm.

I can't say anything about Sig and their QC issues because I haven't personally bought one recently for myself. I only have 3 older models. I can say any gun manufacter has had their flaws with QC and Sig is no exception. I do, however, hold Sig in the highest regard as far as dependable weapons. I can sit here and tell you Ford isn't dependable as a Dodge or Chevy, but you need to find out for yourself. If something happens, Sig will make it right.

This is the way I see it. Use your google fu and see the issues they have. While they may fix your issue with the pistol. After how many rounds do you think you can depend on the pistol for self defense? I'm not a Glock fan boy (don't own one) but they have a good rep and you can pretty much get every part for the pistol.

I will admit that I purchased a 556R last weekend. Granted it's a range toy and not what I'll ever use for SD situations

I have a Sig P229 (non rail) and a Sig P220 (W. German)... I absolutely love them! I've heard of some QC issues with some newer models but have never experienced issues with my older models. I highly recommend Sig.

OK, I'm not a Sig Guy. I just don't like the ergonomics. That being said, I have shot the P938 and if I were buying a pocket gun, I'm sold! Probably the best shooting compact I have fired.

They may have had some QC. issues, bit what I know about Sig is that, like the other big manufacturers, they stand behind their product and will correct any problems you may have.

Or..............get a Hi Point and throw it away when it breaks.
