So much for the theory that open-carry prevents crime. Let's start a pool on how long it takes for OCT or OCTC to post this event on their Facebook page. I'll take one square -- "never."

If you are going to open carry, I would think situational awareness is extremely important. You may be exercising your rights, but it is like walking around wearing a Rolex. You have to be aware that everyone can see that you are carrying something valuable.

^^ There you go ^^ We off-road several times a year and I'll sort-of open carry where legal. Sort-of for me means I make no effort to conceal it, otherwise I would far prefer being stealthy.

question is why didnt he fired.... story says it was a Walther .22. if its like the one my daughter has just a little flip of the safety to fire and thats all... still double action after flipping the safety.... IF he had a round chambered and a magazine inserted.. daughters wont fire unless it has the magazine inserted...

One of the comments below the article indicated the law in Oregon may be that OC guns cannot be loaded. Anyone know the law up there?

Also, I really cannot understand why one would open carry a new gun. Not sure if he practiced for hours that day or never fired it, but just odd.



I would also add: situational awareness is king, carrying or not. When it comes down to it, if he wasn't carrying, the guy might have still robbed them and took their wallets instead.

I guess the other suspicious side of my mind says he could have sold the pistol on the street for a lot of money then called in a stolen firearm report. Not sure if the street value of a new pistol is high enough to warrant that suspicion.

This is why I would not open carry if it passed. It doesn't take another armed person to take your gun. Just think of the "knock out game". Any of those scum bags could become armed scum bags if they came across someone with a side arm openly hanging on thier belt.

Can't imagine brand new getting enough of a premium; if it works, the potential buyers aren't likely to care whether it's fresh, since it'll probably be going into a lake (or a no-questions-asked buyback) soon anyway.

21yo out at 2:00am open carrying a .22 gets robbed by a teenager.

This has stupid written all over it. The sad thing - all totally preventable by simply going to bed at a decent hour.

What if the .22 was his main carry gun and he had a 9mm or .45 in an ankle holster for a BUG? Then, as the BG was running away pull that one out and holler, "Hey! Do you want this one too?

It sounds like it was a .22 target pistol so I don't think he was carrying it for self defense. In that case, it's not much different than if that crook robbed somebody openly displaying a nice watch or other jewelry, or carjacked someone with a fancy car. It's also not a very big step for someone like that to rape a young woman who openly displayed her legs or cleavage in a nightclub after midnight.

All of those crimes could be prevented if the victims use some common sense but I'm not going to blame a victim just because I don't like their lifestyle choices.
