I am getting ready to fly to El Paso (I moved to San Antonio) and will be driving back with my wife as I move her here. I have a I am sure silly question. I promise I tried searching the forum but was unlucky.

Can anyone recommend a good case I can use for transporting my weapon to El Paso? I have my Ruger SR9 that I would like to take with me. Is it okay to keep the ammo in the magazine or does it need to be in the box. I believe I remember being told that I can't have the weapon loaded or magazine in the weapon.

Also can anyone recommend a good range in San Antonio? I haven't been since I moved here in August (new job, and been that crazy busy).

For airlines, the $20 sheet metal lockboxes work inside locked luggage. So do cheap plastic cases with a padlock in emergencies. The firearm has to be unloaded and you have to declare it in checked bag. There's a legal way to have loaded mags but if you have to ask you're safer with a box of ammo and empty mags.

If you're flying your own GA aircraft, you should be legal to carry but verify with your own lawyer.

Well I was thinking of pulling my G6 out of storage the other day. Then I woke up and realized I didn't win the lottery again and would just have to settle for flying southwest.

I am going to be taking a cloth bag. I am curious of something that will not get the TSA people bent out of shape.

I have used one of the Academy metal lockboxes inside a fabric roller bag, with cheap luggage locks on the roller bag. Southwest and Continental (pre merger) had no problems.

If it came in a hard side case that can be padlocked you're good to go with that as long as it cannot be easily pried open. Put your ammo back in the original box and the box in the suitcase. Flown SW several times and never a problem.

It's easiest to remove all the ammo from all magazines and carry ammo in its original container. Some airlines let me fly with ammo in a covered magazine (in a mag holder). Last time I flew AA they made me take the ammo out of the magazine, even though the loaded mag was in a mag holder. Thankfully I had the box with additional ammo, so I just moved my mag ammo over there.

Depends on the airline... depends on the person doing the checking.... Ammo in the original box is easiest.
One caveat.... I'm assuming that the original box provided for a way to keep the rounds from touching.
Stuffing loose rounds into a box or bag would be a no-no.

This is asking for trouble. It may be ok... but... maybe not.

I bought a Pelican case at Academy and plucked out the foam to fit my Defender. Bought two long shackle Master locks (make sure they fit through the locking holes). The padlocks I got fit snug up against the case and do not flop around a lot. I didn't plan it that way, just got lucky.

I also have a coated cable that I made with materials from Home Depot (vinyl coated 1/8" steel cable and ferrules wrapped in tape). I use it as a cable lock and it is more flexible than the ones supplied from gun manufacturer. The cable and lock I have is small and flexible enough to be able to fit in the case. It gets a little crowded but it is doable. This also gives me a method of locking the case or gun to something if I should need to leave it. Not my first or second choice but it does give me an option.

I also print off the TSA and airline's regulations for checking a firearm. I keep one copy in the case with the firearm and one with me. I have had to show a TSA agent the regs before.

I have never had a real problem. Make sure you stay close because they will want you to open your bag and the case to check the firearm. When they are finished lock up the case (your lock NOT TSA approved) and your bag (a TSA approved lock).

That's what I use. I tie the cable to the frame of my luggage. They can steal the whole bag, but not the gun by itself.
