Will they steal my gun in New Orleans?

I've read some of the older posts regarding gun grabbing by New Orleans police. They'll ask you if you have a receipt and then confiscate if you don't...you are required by law to inform an LEO if you have a concealed weapon. I've read how to deal with it and how to avoid the issue, but it's still a hassle. It's also official intimidation, but that's another matter.

The posts are a couple years old.

I'm heading there this weekend and wonder if I should leave it at home. Any recent news on the topic?

I lived there for 30 years and never had an issue. The only time I've heard about gun grabbing in New Orleans was shortly after Katrina.

I searched.. There were a few incidents after 2008, but there were also incidents of police seizing other "valuables" without probable cause. Hardly seems to be the norm.

yes. they will take your gun and then you will have to provide proof of purchase back at the evidence room. you will get it back all banged and scratched up if youre lucky.

they got really bad after katrina. It really depends on the cop. Im sure there are a few good ones left, its a gamble though. but once they take it getting it back is hell.

New Orleans is right up there with Las Vegas, southern Kalifornia and all of yankeedom as places where I have absolutely no business. Oh, did I mention Seattle?

Enjoy!

There's a lot of homeless people in New Orleans, we went over the summer and I got separated from my family for a few seconds and a bum was making a bee line for my 13 year old daughter. I didn't pull my gun but once he saw me coming he turned and ran.

So be careful, the city put signs saying to travel in large groups.

I take a picture of my receipts with my phone and have a backup app that does a daily backup to the cloud(wherever that is,in the ground I think). It has come in handy in the past, not for guns but other things.

Me either. I've been there a couple of times but I no longer have any interest in going anywhere that smells like urine and vomit all the time. :grumble

Bourbon Street and the surrounding area does. I've never stayed anywhere else. I've been twice. Once in 2006 and once in 2010. It was that way both times. I've been walking to get breakfast at 0700 and had to walk around pools of vomit in the streets. At that hour I saw many folks with water hoses washing these pools away. This wasn't even one of their big "party" times like Mardi Gras or even on a weekend. This was middle of the week in October.

Love NOLA, go at least once a year. Never had any interactions with local PD.

Regarding the smell. Imagine an area where a frat party has been going on for 100 years and no one has stopped to clean up.

Such a darned shame. When I was young--read: many moons ago--New Orleans was a favorite destination: it's close enough to Houston to make a weekend of it; decades ago Jackson Square was well-maintained, and an early morning beignet at Cafe Du Monde was a must-do; an evening in the French Quarter to listen to jazz was also a must-do; and it was one of my favorite restaurant cities, with inestimable places like the original Brennan's, Commander's Palace, Antoine's, Arnaud's, and K-Paul's.

I attended a business conference in N.O. a year after Katrina and decided that the former luster of the French Quarter was likely gone forever. No longer a travel destination for me. Sigh.
