Hello group. My first instructor re-cert is due in December, 2015. Can anyone tell me how the process works? Will I be notified? What is involved in the re-cert? Handgun qualification? Written test again? One day or more? Any information will be appreciated.

Not sure how it will be handled in 2015, but in 2013 all instructors were notified and had to attend a DPS instructor classroom session to get re-certified. DPS brought the classes to some of the metro areas for instructors to attend. For the shooting portion you had to get a qualification from another instructor.

My second recert will be due next year. Looking forward to hearing what the process will be this time.

In some ways I hope there isn't one because constitutional carry has passed...

I'd be out some disposable income but I think it might be worth it.

We have a whole year for DPS to decide what they want to do. I won't be too concerned about it till around September, or so.

The 2015 renewal will be online as it was in 2011. Tex. Gov't Code §411.190(d-1).

The problem with waiting until September is that we will only have a few months to react to whatever DPS imposes. For those who work full time jobs and may have trouble scheduling classes. traveling overnight for a class, etc., the more time they have the better.

The only problem with that is that the Government Code doesn't tell us when or where the recert classes will be, etc. so that we can try to plan. I realize that this might not be a problem for those who are retired and teach a few classes, or those who just work part time and are flexible in their schedules.
Many instructors work full time jobs other than CHL training, and their employers require them to schedule time off in advance.

I read D1 as saying renewal will be online. For us "first time" renewals, forgive me if this is a dumb question. Will we get a letter 6 months before expiration, and can we renew early (within 6 months)?

DPS alternates between live class renewals and online renewals. Renewals in 2015 will be online. When we renewed online in 2011, there was no shooting requirement and I'm guessing that there will not be one in 2015. I say this because §411.190(d-1) requires online renewals, not merely online renewals for the classroom portion of the course. That at least gives DPS discretion to allow renewal without shooting and perhaps even mandates no shooting.

I can't recall now, but I think the online renewal class was opened after the close of the 2011 Texas Legislative Session. That would be prudent as it would allow DPS to include any rule changes in the renewal course.

So we should be getting some kind of notice to go online and take an online renewal class, or just to go online and fill out a form and give them our credit card to renew?
Or will there be no notice, and it is up to each of us to keep checking with DPS about how to renew online?
