What's the best way to go about things? I will probably take ElGato's class since I'm next to Texas City. Anything else I need to know?
Go to the range a few times to get familiar with your Glock. Make sure you understand the 4 safety Rules. I mean, really understand them.
Egato and Tammy will take care of all the rest.

ElGato will give you the packet at the class. My husband took his class & highly recommends him.

Practice a bit before going.

Once you've passed the class & mailed off your packet, do all the reading you can on concealed carry and the law while you wait.

You can't go wrong with ElGato. You don't need to do anything with DPS first. It seems like some people who try, screw up some part of it.

Meanwhile, if you have ever been arrested, you need documentation showing that charges were dropped or you were found not guilty. It can be hard to obtain if the arrest was a long time ago or far away.

If you have ever been convicted of a misdemeanor that will not prevent you from getting a CHL, you also need documentation of the disposition of that case.

ElGato takes photos during the class. If you're vain, get your hair done and wear a tasteful shirt.

Yes, you do.

The application says "Include certified copies of judgment and sentence from the courts," in bold capital letters.

The background check that DPS performs might clear up some relatively recent cases in the county where live or work. I don't know how that works.
