Years ago I maintained offices in both New Orleans and Houston. At the very first opportunity I shut down the Houston office and have not been back since. As soon as my kids reached school age I gave up the New Orleans office and moved to rural TX. I do my best to stay out of DFW, but I avoid Houston like the plague. YMMV.

A friend told me in New York one block can be bad and dangerous and the next block can be perfectly safe. I got off a train in New York and was immediately picked out as a mark by a scout for a Taxi kidnapping robbery scam.

When I was in Paris, I spent some time near Gare du Nord train station. I mentioned it to a friend who knew Paris and they said "oh no that area is not safe". Of course while I was there it was all fabulous, I saw none of the tell tale signs of a bad neighborhood, after all the whole city is old and run down looking. Same with London, everything is quaint, your American bad part of town radar is thrown off. They didn't have guards in the lobby of every building for no reason.

In Houston, your bad part of town radar, works just fine. Most of the things I link to about crime in Houston are in the Northeast quadrant of town. There is nothing in that part of town for a visitor anyway except, potentially Gunspoint and Bush International Airport.

However, there have been several late night robberies of Denny's, IHop type restaurants near freeways and large easy to escape roads in Houston this year. Nothing good happens after midnight.

I can't imagine any reason for being in that area. Houston has a lot of good but also more than enough bad. It might improve if consequences were severe enough and harsh enough.

Anyone who thinks the crime is related to the area and how "run down" it is needs to think again. I live in Cypress and you'd be hard pressed to find an area that compares to the wards of houston. yet these last couple of years crime has exploded with everything from purse snatchings to home invasions and homicides..... i'm also going to be moving as soon as we can get our house sold. taking it out west back to small town living and a long commute.....
