Just went home on leave to MS. Traveled through AR and TN. Open carried twice just to see what it was like. Not a big advocate of OC, but figured I'd give it a shot since it was legal. Went to Wal-Mart, McDonalds, and a few other places. I had my Springfield GI .45 on my right hip in the OWB holster that comes with it, and a kydex double mag pouch on the other side, so it was obvious. I didn't expect a marching band or anything, but I did figure I'd get a few "looks". I was very surprised. No one ever really gave me a second glance--even a cop.

Were you in uniform?

Nope, in civies--could get in trouble for that if not on duty-or carrying my personal weapon.

I did the "Celebration of Freedom" (open carry) while on vacation in New Hampshire.

I did it two ways: deliberately open carry, and taking no pains to conceal.

For the latter, I just left my cover shirt unbuttoned and let it flap in the breeze. Got some big smiles from the locals. Very friendly folks up in the White Mountains.

It is a nice feeling to have that option.

I think that I was only aware of Arizona. But you seen to indicate that you opened carry in Arkansas,Tennessee and Mississippi. I wasn't aware at all that either of those states allow it.

Texas allows open carry of handguns by people who are traveling, "engaging in lawful hunting, fishing, or other sporting activity on the immediate premises where the activity is conducted, or is directly en route between the premises and the actor's residence, if the weapon is a type commonly used in the activity..."

I don't recommend it, but it's legal.

Texas also allows open carry of long guns.

New Hampshire is a nice state, in more ways than one.

Open carry is allowed, and is REASONABLY well accepted. But problems can sometimes crop up in the southern part of the state where there are a lot of "tax refugees" from MA. They move into a free state to escape confiscatory taxation, but bring a lot of their crazy "people's republic" ideas with them.

A couple of years ago, there was some video posted on a Northeast "gun board" showing a guy carrying openly while walking down the street in downtown Nashua, NH. A couple of radio units pulled up and stopped the guy for questioning. They asked him what he was doing and why was he carrying, and he basically said he was just "out for a walk". After a few minutes of this, the cops folded their tents and left, and the guy continued his walk.

The point is, he attracted attention, and had to put up with the hassle of being stopped and questioned.

Now if this had been in some small town in the mid-northern part of the state, no one would have given him a second glance.

But keep this in mind. They have a strange law up there that says when you are in your car, the gun has to be unloaded. When you leave the car, you can load it. (Does not apply to NH CHL's who can keep their guns loaded all the time.)

Yes. And in many of the orange ("anomalous") states, too.

For instance, unlicensed open carry is perfectly legal in New Hampshire. But they get an "anomalous" rating because you can't carry a loaded handgun in a car without a license.

In some states, like Louisiana, unlicensed open carry is legal, but you can run afoul of local ordinances, and restrictions on where you can carry.

The real surprise about that map is how few red states there are. It's sad that Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas are among them.

And, after clicking on Texas map, I saw similar on the referenced "open carry dot org" web site.

It seems that a Texas proponent of open-carry might need to update them on the now-at-least 2-year-old critera regarding the presumption of "traveling" and motor vehicles, particularly the "not in plain view".

Texas law has allowed travelers to carry handguns without regard to concealment for a long time.

Someone riding a horse from Abilene to Amarillo 100 years ago would have been traveling.

The 2005 modification of the law says that a person is presumed to be traveling if he is in a privately owned motor vehicle, the weapon is not in plain view, and several other conditions.

That doesn't contradict the older intent of the law. It's an addition.

If I decided to ride my horse say from mansfield to the west side of fort worth could I open carry as I am traveling? I mean I would be doing my best to help stave off global warming
