Background checks reduce gun violence?

Can anyone show me where NICS/background checks have reduced "gun violence"? All I can find is where firearm violence either stayed the same or increased until the states started legislating concealed carry. Then it started drop by state as CC was introduced. Look at Washington D.C.. The year it was introduced their violent crime statistics went down.
Some political groups and legislators keep harping on more background checks. What proof if any shows that background checks reduce crime?
