I've looked at the info for the IDPA at PSC in Houston, and one of the statements is "enough ammo for a match", but since I've never been to one, I have no idea how much that is. Is ball ammo ok, or do you need something else?

What else is required? I understand there are restrictions on types of holsters (I manly use a Fobus paddle). Does it have to be concealed?

You can use any kind of bullet you ike. JHP, FMJ, lead.......if they're reloads, they're supposed to meet a minimum power factor. Bring 150-200 rounds max

You should have these items at the minimum:

pistol
eye and ear protection
holster (you'll have to check adn see of your holster is legal, ask at a match)
concealment garment (shirts work well unless its windy)
mags (3 is a good number to have) - stick in pocket if needed or get a mag pouch


Add on if you decide to stick with IDPA:
concealment garment
mag pouches
Lots of ammo!!!!

And most important. A big willingness to have a ton of fun, Meet some of the best people around, and become really addicted.

A normal match is between 80 and 120 scored rounds. Bring some extra for your extra shots and what-not. 200 is certainly safe. You may get by with less, but I figure they'll ultimately go to good use.

For equipment, first time shooters usually get a lot of leway regarding the finer points of what is legal equipment. At a minimum, you need to have a strong-side holster (your Fobus paddle will be fine) and a few spare magazines with ammo (and eye and ear protection obviously). A concealment garment is usually required, but sometimes omitted during the hot months (check the PSC IDPA web site to be sure). Magazine pouches will speed up your shooting, but you can keep them in your pockets if you have to.

Make sure that the club allows "lead" bullets. My club shoots indoors and cast lead bullets are a no-go unless they're the Moly Coated type.
This is due to airborne contaminants.

Just show up with safety being your #1 priority and you will have a blast!

I will likely be attending one on a Wednesday in the next couple of weeks if you want to ride along. There is not a better group out there for a first match.

eye and ear protection - Can be rented from the clubhouse if need be. PSC doesn't have any to rent/loan, etc. Some shooters may have spares, but you can get cheapy disposables and adequate plastic safety glasses at hardward or sporting goods stores.

Ammo for PSC is typically 100 to 120 rounds, 150 at the outside

If you go to the West Houston IDPA website http://www.whidpa.com and click on the "find an IDPA club" area to the left on the homepage, it will show you a map of the greater houston area and show you each of the clubs. Click on the icons and it will give you information about when they hold matches, give you driving directions and also if you then click on the club name, it will take you directly to their homepage. (thank Dave R. for doing this for us and the IDPA shooters)

One stop shopping for a IDPA club in the greater Houston area. Hopefully each club will have this on their homepage soon.
