I read your recent article about [insert specific incident here] and I’m here to tell you that it was absolutely absurd and completely off the mark. While I recognize that you have years of formal training and education as well as years, or decades perhaps, in your chosen field, I would like a chance to set the record straight.
You see, I actually have no formal training in your area of expertise, nor have I ever worked in the field. I have, however, read a book written by someone who shares my exact point of view on the matter, listened to hours of talk radio and podcasts, and read an immeasurable number of blogs that address the matter. I am what you might call a self-educated expert in your field.

Your article was very informative; I cannot argue that.

Are you saying opinions are for highly trained experts only and if you are not a highly trained expert, leave your opinion at the door.

Sometimes common sense comes into play. Just because someone is highly trained in a particular field doesn't mean they have good common sense. Just because one is not a mechanic does that mean we can't determine our car isn't running right when it is barely running and there is a loud knocking noise when we accelerate?

For every issue out there, there are experts that could argue a different opinion of how something should have or could be handled. Cops are not above reproach, even by mere citizens. Neither are lawyers, insurance agents, plumbers, mechanics etc.

I guess we shouldn't question doctors either then, right? Problem is, if I hadn't questioned and challenged doctors I might well have a dead wife and a dead child. Twice I had to challenge doctors....once to prevent them from doing something dangerous to my wife, and once to get them to do something when they were being passive about treatment of my son. I've also gone to different doctors for second and third opinions and had all of them tell me something different. In once case I had a doctor tell me that something another doctor told me was impossible.

And you know what....not all mechanics are that smart. I've encountered more than one who despite all his experience didn't know what he was talking about.

Lawyers, don't get me started....

And that's just addressing the issue of knowledge and experience....also to be considered is plain old deceit and corruption and the associated financial and other incentives --not to mention the incentives of self-preservation when having done something wrong....whether deliberately or by accident or incompetence.

I've known a number of self proclaimed experts that weren't...such as incompetent medical doctors for one, incompetent engineers and the list goes on...

This must be my ex-boss! When I was on her staff, I learned quickly that my research should match what I anticipated she wanted to hear. She was notorious for delegating tasks, then changing what she didn't like and turned her version to the Directors. That would be fine if we were wrong in our summation, but I'm never wrong.

I've always heard that over 90% of drivers feel they are above average. I suspect you could substitute many activities and the result would be the same.

I think the same things when people are criticizing insurance agents and companies. There are very few industries in the world that have been built and refined on as much data and analysis.

People, some of them cops, like to tell me they are being overcharged for their auto or home insurance or how they think their claim isn't being adjusted properly. I want to ask them to show me their actuarial data or their policy provisions and claims handling analysis that supports their contention . Keep in mind, I'm the expert because I've been in the business for 20 plus years and have worked with hundreds of clients over that time. Mere citizen insured's can have no valid opinion regarding what you are charged or how your claim is adjusted. Insurance companies are big and powerful and never make mistakes. Therefore, they should not be questioned by the uneducated unwashed masses.
