Went to lunch today after church at Chili's and as I have noticed before I started carrying they have two well displayed signs at both entrances, English, and Spanish something to the affect of...

"The unlawful carrying of a concealed weapon on these premises is strictly prohibited."

Just wonder how many criminals go back to their car to lock up their weapons before entering.

There will be more CHL holders go back and put their gun up because they are unsure than the criminals. That is ashame.

Are you sure it didn't say "the unlicensed carrying..."?

That would be the correct signage for a business that sells alcohol but does not meet the standard of 51% sales for on-premise consumption.

This is a good sign for us as it doesn't apply to CHL. Any chance you read it wrong?

The "unlawful" carrying is "strictly prohibited"? Well, "Duh!"

So what SHOULD they have posted, that the unlawful carrying was ALLOWED?

Now THAT kind of sign would get my attention.

(Maybe they considered doing so, but decided to prohibit unlawful carry at the last minute.)

I think some businesses do this to cover themselves.

We had a meeting on gangs recently at the school. Since most of us were not in criminal street gangs as youngsters, we aren't familiar with their signs and binder grafitti.

We were informed by one of the sheriff's officers that we needed to post our "gun free school zone" sign. She said that a criminal could simply say that he/she didn't know guns weren't allowed on campus. Why some judge/jury would let this one go is beyond me. I guess that's the twisted world we live in.

The restaurant may have been thinking the same thing. They were giving thugs the notice, even if they weren't going to abide by it, just so they have the argument that notice was given.

Color me skeptical, but "Ignorantia legis neminem excusat" as they say. That sounds more like an attempt at rationalization than a valid reason. I think your opinion:

is far more likely to be the true reason. It would certainly be something they could use in a liability suit brought by a shooting victim to say "Hey, we weren't negligent...We did what we reasonably could to prevent this from happening."

Whether it would actually help them or not would be up to a judge or jury.

Like I said "it was something to the affect of", thinking about it now it probably is more likely that is says "the unlicensed carrying".

It also doesn't list any Texas Penal Code.

I was at Chili's in Abilene on Thursday night. The sign posted was the one provided in the TABC sign package. It is the same sign that goes up at any non-51% bar.
I believe that it is required to be posted by the TABC
