I just found out about these classes/workshops, but Tandy Leather in Lubbock is having a holster making workshop on August 22nd. You show up, pay $20 bucks, have your pistol, and a basic idea of what you want to make, and then they give people kits and assistance in making the holster there in the store using the kit and tools from the shop.
I'm going to try it out, just for the knowledge - I'm told they also do gun belt workshops as well from time to time.

I made one when I was a kid. I would ask them how to treat the leather so it will remain stiff and retain its shape.

keep it clean, and do not "deep" oil it. (That's for maintenance)
Normally the leather is shaped and "cased" wet, with either the "subject" firearm (wrapped in plastic "food wrap", or a dummy gun used to form fit the leather. After it's shaped and fully assembled, and it's fully dry, it normally gets a sealant coat. Proper weight leather will retain shape for a long time if kept clean and not abused. Addition of oils that soak into the leather will soften it and make it pliable, losing shape and functionality.

S&D Trading on 34th used to be some kind of independent Tandy store - not sure of the details, or what they sell now. I haven't been in the place on Slide. May have to check it out!

Was an interesting experience - they had a full class and some people left because they didn't get there early and there was simply no more room. Saw some creative ideas for holsters (guns and knives) and learned a lot. Took from 9am to 4pm and still wasn't done - leather wasn't completely dry from wet forming. I'll go back next weekend to dye it and do the final stitching and get a picture up.

There was a Tandy Leather in my town years ago. As a kid, I made holsters, belts, knife scabbards, and a wallet. Then I got in to making jewelry with leather and beads. Overall a great experience for a kid. They closed up somewhere in the 70's. I wish my kids would've had an opportunity to "play" at Tandy.
Tandy Leather was, is I guess, the parent company to Radio Shack. The outlook for this company is not good, sorry to say.
