They now are saying he was injured by shrapnel. He was reloading a magazine when he dropped a round which 'exploded" when it hit the ground.
I've never heard of a round detonating by being dropped.

article now reads that it was a dropped round while customer was reloading. Round exploded and sent shrapnel into his side, causing a 'minor injury.'
I'd rather read that than someone sending a ND into some poor dude.

I've dropped way more than my fair share of rounds without having one grenade on me. I'd be curious to know what he was firing...

Likely more to the story. Maybe he dropped a hang-fire.
Edited: After Googling around a little I found references to .22 rimfire going off from a drop. Hitting the edge of the rim sounds plausible.

One thing the have to improve at FGC:
1) Add a emergency/first kit aid for trauma injury
2) Train some of the employees for first aid ( call 911, stop the bleeding, keep the breathing way open, keep the injured awake)

Actually, have somebody else call 911 while you stop the bleeding. They're both first priorities.

.22 rimfire is fun to shoot but the ricochets will leave you a little edgy (yes, I know, that is not the mechanism of injury in this case).
I have fired thousands of .22 rounds and dropped a bunch through the years on various surfaces---never had one explode on me.
I guess the lesson is to always be careful around ammo. Dropped firearms and dropped ammo now---not good.

I wonder if it was a handload? If the primer wasn't properly seated I could see maybe the drop setting it off? It's possible not probable

I read on another forum that it was a Ruger SR22 that came apart while shooting. The shrapnel was plastic bits of the pistol.

I've had a 22 long rifle go off in the head of an old beater bar vacuum cleaner many years ago vacuuming under the edge of the bed. Zero damage just a loud pop.

Right on!

There were no body parts flying around or heads rolling down the staircase so what's the big deal?
