According to Sgt. Freddie Tevis with the Anderson Police Department, William R. Rothel, 29, was at the Payless Super Market on Meridian Street around 1 p.m. Saturday. Rothel randomly grabbed the young boy and put him in a chokehold. Police do not believe Rothel knew the boy. Officers think this was a random act of violence.

Mom screamed, shoppers separated them and held the Rothel until police arrived.

He's charged with kidnapping, criminal confinement, strangulation, and criminal recklessness, all felonies.

Unsurprisingly he has had previous acquaintance with felonies.

Glad it ended well. That 8 year old is going to have a different outlook on life, as will his mom.

It is definitely not a situation I ever look forward to, but to practice for. I would probably take the shot if available.
