The man failed to open the locked front door but then entered the kitchen through the garage, she later told deputies.

The woman, who was armed with a handgun, said she confronted the suspect and demanded that he leave but he refused. Fearful about the safety of her children and herself, she said she fired one round at the man, hitting him in the abdomen.

Oh, that's easy. "You're not really gonna shoot that gun. You're not the kind of person who would shoot someone. Put it down." Pow!

And with a .44 Magnum

Looks like dirtbag will recover. Bet that'll leave a mark.

He is lucky.

I read an article by a morgue worker that "there is no such thing as an attempted suicide with a .44 magnum."

This a bit of thread drift, but JALLEN's post reminded me of a story that a chief warden
of the California Fish and Game told at one of the yearly meetings. Part of the meeting
was a summary of the safety statistics for the year.

After a day of hunting, there were a group of hunters sitting around a camp fire at night.
They were sitting around the fire, talking and drinking. Some of them quite heavily.
One of the men noticed that a beetle had climbed on him and was perched on top of his knee.
Rather than brush it off, he decided to shoot it off. Yep, he had a .44 Magnum.
He died. :tiphat:

She said way more to him than I would have. If you break a window to get into my house I don't ask questions.

I am very happy she had the means to protect herself and her children.
Take that Obama.

Some of the comments on the KXAN story are hilariously sterotypical of Austin regressives. "In my opinion, she had no right to shoot him". "What is she thinking with children and guns in the same house?", "I keep a can of wasp spray handy for situations like this.", etc...

Just make sure it's the 20 ft version.

Comments like that had to come from non native Texans. Guns and kids in the same house oh dear!!!! I'm sure no kid has ever died from cooking up some drug from wasp spray.

I just can't wrap my head around someone making a comment like that. I guess someone like that thinks it's ok if the perp causes severe physical harm or worse to the victims, but that the victim has no right to defend themself. I don't understand their thought process at all.

I completely agree. They also seem to lean heavily on the mental illness angle, too. I didn't happen to notice if the intruder has been adjudicated as mentally ill, but if not, just saying someone is mentally ill doesn't make it so. The regressives use that as their go-to argument constantly.

The formula is simple really:

Is he in my house? Yes.
Does he belong in my house. No.

He is a threat. Bang.

I don't understand that either. It is like they think the woman could be raped repeatedly and every thing of worth she had destroyed, but as long as they weren't trying to kill her, she shouldn't shoot them. There are some thefts a person might spend the rest of their life trying to recover from. The thief's life just isn't worth that much. It isn't even worth the risk of waiting to find out his intentions.
