Seguin: Cop shoots robber

This is of interest to me since I live and work around Seguin, and the initial event was at a Pic'n'Pac I stop at a lot because it is near where I work.
Police shoot, kill armed robbery suspect after chase ending in Kingsbury
Seguin Gazette requires subscription to read the whole story, so I shall try to summarize:
Tuesday 26 Apr at 2323 a guy entered the Pic'n'Pac at the southwest corner of SH 123 Bypass and I-10 wearing a ski mask and a motorcycle helmet, and carrying a pistol grip shotgun...well, not just a shotgun, but a "shortbarreled, pistol-grip, assault-style shotgun". I'll be interested to see if this really had a short barrel, or it just looked like it.
Anyway, the clerks locked themselves in an office and called 911. The guy wandered around the store, then got on his motorcycle at the same time the police arrived. The officers saw him put the shotgun in a backpack. He led them (including county deputies and state trooper) on a chase to Kingsbury, about 10 miles away, stopping a couple times enroute.
Near the intersection of SH 90 and FM 1104 he stopped for good, got off his bike, and paced around with the backpack in his right hand while arguing with the cops. Apparently he walked back and forth edging his way closer to the police. The police said they told him at least 42 times to drop the backpack.
He then "(placed his hand inside the backpack and took a 'shooting stance') while pointing his arm and bag at officers" and one of the Seguin police officers shot him with a "department issued patrol rifle." Boom, DOS.
Unsurprisingly the robber, Darrel Machemehl, has a history of armed robbery, fleeing from police officers, and resisting arrest.
