Investigators believe cars engaged in speed racing may have caused a fatal crash on Highway 99W east of McMinnville Wednesday night, officials said.

The driver of a Mitsubishi Lancer traveling north on the roadway shortly before 9 p.m. lost control, spun across the median and struck a Honda Odyssey
van traveling south, said Capt. Bill Fugate, a spokesman for Oregon State Police.

I believe it is the same as "street racing".
Street racing is a form of unsanctioned and illegal auto racing which takes place on public roads.

Thank you, "street" racing I'm familiar with. "Speed" racing sounded like a Japanese cartoon.

Speed Racer was the name of a Japanese cartoon.
Maybe that is where the "reporter" got the phrase.
