My sister lives about 100 miles from there, sent her the link. What drives someone to behave this way? I dont get it.

Maintain situational awareness all the time.

Note to criminals: If you rob and kill someone, don't beat up your wife or girlfriend later.

I just had a lapse in judgement concerning situational awareness today that hit me after it was over. Basically a man (55-60 years old plus spouse) dropped a quarter as I exited a restaurant. I immediately bent to pick it up for him. Afterward, I realized I took my eyes away and it could have been a ploy to distract me.
To be clear, I'm not overzealous about these types of events, but I usually look back thinking of ways the event could have gone wrong.
As for the event in this topic, how do people get to the point where harming someone else becomes a plan? Sick!

In 3rd world countries, it is common knowledge not to stop your car for vicitms of car wrecks and things in the road. Sad, because that means nobody will help each other in times of crisis in these countries. I always help out stranded motorists and the last time my car broke down, 3 vehicles stopped and asked if I needed help within a span of 30 minutes. This was in Allen. That's why I live in Texas, not New York city.

Happens in TX too! I know of a guy who was killed near College Station ( back in the 70s) when he stopped to help change a tire. So, watch your back.

It happens to all of us. I recall a time where a guy came up to me asking for money. I wasn't sure why he wanted to talk to me when I first saw him. He put his hand out to shake hands and I did so. Nothing happened, but it occurred to me that my body language gave away that I was carrying concealed and shaking hands could have been a ploy. It turned out okay, but something to keep in mind.

Yes, I have heard of that sort of thing periodically in Texas also. There is no "safe area" where crime won't happen. There are just areas where it is more likely and less likely.

^^^^^^^^^^ Exactly.
I live out in the country and the nearest town is a small College Town of about 40,000 population.
We have the same TYPES of crime as anywhere else just FEWER of them. I am sometimes less 'on guard' here than I am when visiting Houston, Austin, etc....

That's the difference between high trust and low trust societies. In high trust societies we deal comfortably with strangers, expecting to be treated fairly and treating others accordingly. In low trust societies, people identify only with their tribe, clan, or other family grouping, regarding others with suspicion and feeling entitled to take advantage of others.
