Facing heightened risk of Russian invasion, Estonia has no hope of facing off the Russian army in a pitched battle, so it is preparing for an insurgency.

There's all kinds of lessons in that article, aren't there? I shamelessly stole your link and facebooked it. But my main point is this: THIS is how the U.S. gov't should relate to militias — encouraging them with training and materials, rather than disparaging them and treating them with suspicion.

The problem is the US government, or at least a large part of it, sees themselves as the "occupiers" and wants us to submit instead of resist.

Why does everybody always assume you can't beat a modern military, it's called asymmetrical warfare, you go after the infrastructure, you go after ammo and fuel dumps, hit them when ever they present a weak spot, you don't have to beat them outright, you bleed them with a thousand cuts!

We were beat in Iraq. Imagine if millions of people stood up and lived among innocents. It really couldn't be beat. In Iraq and Afghanistan the enemy used carriers to deliever messages because big brother was all over the technology.

People worry about drones being able to sniff out and attack insurgents, but every drone requires a pilot. Big difference when the pilot gets off work and goes home 3000 miles away from the people he's targeting and from those who reside in the same country/state/area.
Lots of fictional stories written about American Patriots standing up and defeating a belligerent, non-Constitution abiding US government via insurgency tactics.
Remains to be seen if fiction becomes fact....I wouldn't bet against the Patriots!

It was fact, at least once. Ever heard of the Battle of Athens?

Actually, I missed that one!
Since 1915, officials of seven governments "gone bad" have committed genocide, murdering at least 56 million persons, including millions of children. "Gun control" clears the way for genocide by giving governments "gone bad" far greater freedom to commit mass murder.

Placed in an environment where you are fighting a superior force an insurgency doesn't have to win so long as they don't lose!
The modern army depends a great deal on electricity, both to run machines and charge batteries, first order of business is to go after far flung towers and sub stations, once the power grid is made unrealiable and the standing military is now dependent on generators, then you go after the fuel supply, once again hit the weak points, the unguarded assets, etc!

Think about this, the education level of a typical afghan or iraqi tribesman, now compare that to your typical American, an insurgency is bad, a educated insurgency would be a nightmare!

Think about an educated insurgency, trained by retired/active Special Forces who specialize in such things.

EXACTLY!
You cannot subjugate an armed populace
