I own a wide variety of low cost (gun specific) eye protection, but have decided to upgrade.

However, I haven't a clue as to what to look at in the way of high quality non-prescription eye protection.

What say you?

I've also been looking at new eye pro - haven't decided on brand, but i do what to have the MIL SPEC (MIL-PRF-31013) ballistic lens. Wiley X and Oakley are what I am looking at, Wiley X is much less expensive.

I have eye pro from Wiley X, Howard Leight and ESS Eyepro. They all meet milspec ballistic standards.

The Wiley X is my favorite, has 3 different lenses - clear, amber and shaded.

I do just the opposite. Since I am an instructor and many of my students borrow my eye and ear pro, they get used a lot. I tend to buy a lot of cheaper eye pro, and when it gets too scratched up, I just throw them away or use them in my home workshop. I have seen expensive glasses get dropped, bent up, stepped on, or otherwise mangled when they were fairly new, and I hate to waste money like that.
Everyone has different ways of accomplishing the same thing.

I am not an instructor, but I do shoot a lot. I like having an extra pair of eye and ear pro in my car in case I happen to stop by the range on a given day. And I would prefer to not have the extra step of casing and uncasing my shooting glasses when I am using them at the range.

Personally, I use a not very expensive ballistic eye pro that meets ANSI, but not mil spec because it has +2.0 bifocal reading glass in the bottom (yep I am old and the arms are too short) with the top clear (or smoke tinted). These cost about $30 each delivered. Have a good set of ESS that are mil spec, but no reading glass (unless I want to spend big bucks to get special lenses). For students I have several cheap sets that meet ANSI, but not mil spec ballistic protection.

I started thinking about this yesterday when I opened a new pair of inexpensive eye protection for my wife and they worked for her, uncomfortably so...

So, we'll be moseying through the internet and Cabelas to get some good eye protection.

The el cheapo's just scratch up too easily, hurt my/our noses and generally are ill fitting, but hey, better than none, of course...

I have two pairs of Wiley X with the interchangeable lenses. They are extremely difficult to change out the first several times. I mainly use the shaded and clear lenses. I've never had to put them to the test, but they are comfortable and fit under earmuffs well.

I guess it depends on whether you need prescription lenses or not. I wear my regular glasses and I use the Allen Over Shooting Glasses. They are ANSI Z87.1. They make them clear and tinted. When I shoot clays I need to block my left eye and put a piece of scotch tape over a small part of the left eyepiece. I find them comfortable, cheap and I throw them when they are scratched. They also don't interfere with muffs at least on my head. Cheap at Amazon. My wife wears contacts and of course has more expensive shooting glasses.
If interested, Allen # 2170 is yellow tinted, #2169 is clear. I also use them when reloading.

Since we only have two eyes, I learned a long time ago to take care of them. For more years than I like to admit and through hundreds of thousands of rounds if not more, of shotgun shells, I have used two brands. One is Decot. The other is Randolf Ranger. They both are excellent quality and are made for shooting. Both offer an almost unlimited number of lens colors from clear on up. I have many colors to use depending on background situations or light conditions. Single, Bifocal or Trifocal. Made for shotgun, rifle or pistol. Neither are cheap but when one shoots or loads a lot, the cost is minor for the protection offered.

Wiley-x military series have the best protection I've found at reasonable prices. The mil spec models are better than ANSI ratings if he remember correctly

The best by far. You can adjust them up or down and the arms are adjustable too. Highly recommended. The strap is very handy too.

Whatever you do try them on first before you buy. I was looking to replace my Oakleys and was looking at some Costa del Mar, I went and tried on several pairs and didn't like any of them. They were all very uncomfortable to me despite being ~200$ glasses. I shoot in either my Oakleys or another pair of safety glasses that I usually wear to work, both fit tight to my face and have always worked fine. I have found that I can replace the lenses in my Oakleys for about half the price of a whole new set once the lenses get scratched too much.

Too bad there are no local dealers listed on the ESS website. I'm spending my own money so it's hard to pay $100 or more without knowing how they fit.

I had that problem with Wiley-X several years ago. The original Romer fit great. Then I bought a Romer II and fitment failure.
