I can use some advice re: I'll be going to my grandson's grad from army basic at Ft.Sill,Okla.this Friday.I have never ridden on a base while chl,what do I need to know?(Can I have it in my vehicle while on base?)

The official word from Sgt. Anderson at Military Police on the post is:

"It is ok to have a firearm in the vehicle as long as it's stored with the ammunition seperate and the firearm is in a locked case. Inform the MP at the gate that you've got a weapon in the vehicle and that it's locked up and you may travel on Post with it in the car. Carrying it concealed on the post is not permitted"

Hmm.... I haven't thought of that. If it's in your trunk then you're not carrying concealed. The 30.06 sign at the gate does not apply. I think I'll call Carswell AFB/NAS Fort Worth JRB.

Carswell has very different ideas about firearms. They say "no" and mean it.

Yep, fraid so. And, they randomly search vehicles too.

Yep, Ft Hood is no weapons, no how, no way also. They x-ray all commercial vehicles, and do random searches on pov's.

Unless things have changed since I worked the gate at Ft Hood they search ALL vehicles without a DOD sticker. They also randomly search vehicles with a DOD sticker. Now Ft Sill I have no idea. I really think you may be out of luck. If nothing else call that bases Provost Marshall's office and see what they say. Because base commanders can basically make their own laws when it comes to things like this. Here is a link to all the applicable phone numbers for the provost marshalls office. I would start by calling the Desk Sgt. Usually most post if they let you on with it you have to check it in at the PMO and then get it back when you leave.

Worst case scenario--you have to check it at the armory. No big deal.

Tell your Grandson congrats and good luck in AIT (Artillery?) Tell him he should call his Drill Sergeant by his first name at least once before he leaves!

When I was stationed at Dyess AFB, people that lived in Base Housing had personal firearms. They must have driven on base with them. Also, the range was open for personal firearms on Tuesday evenings. So there has to be some exclusion.

You may have a personal weapon on base but #1--you have to be going directly to or from where you intend to use it (ie. coming on base to shoot at the range can't stop at the px or cruise the flightline--- or going on and off base from your place of residence.) #2--It has to be unloaded and the action open with ammo not readily accessible. Also, certain places on post are strictly prohibited--ie; when I lived in the barracks, I kept my guns at my supervisor's house in base housing. Where you are going (parade field, recruit housing, reception center, etc are going to be a definate no weapons area. Just show up at the gate--park at the visitors center prior to entry, and tell them your situation. Or better yet, call before hand.

Always best to call first........while there's certaily a specific law pertaining to firearms on Military bases, there's always different ways in which those laws are interpreted and enforced. Call and get the answer form the people who will have you face down on the pavement....that way there's no question as to how you should proceed.

I would say call them but here is what their website says about concealed weapons on post by guests:

Q: My father has a concealed weapons permit from Oklahoma and is coming to visit me, what rules does he have to follow?

A: The Oklahoma concealed weapon law does not apply on Fort Sill. All personnel must follow Fort Sill policy regarding weapon use, storage and transport upon entry on to the installation. Concealed weapons are prohibited on post unless authorized by DES for law enforcement duties as prescribed in AR 190-14, para 2-8. Military personnel violating this prohibition subject themselves to disciplinary action under the UCMJ and/or administrative actions as deemed appropriate by the commander. Family members, civilian employees or other civilians violating this prohibition subject themselves to administrative action and/or criminal prosecution under applicable state, federal laws and regulations.

So basically it's a no fly zone and they aren't going to let you on. No way no how.
