When the retired officer thought he had fired all of the ammunition in his AR-15, he told deputies he set it in the bed of his truck and took out a second AR-15.

Does that privilege always extend across state lines? The retired Alabama officer was cleaning up an Oklahoma problem. It is probably good he wasn't camping in New Jersey or Maryland as they prefer a less vigilant citizenry.

I have one in whatever I'm driving all the time. Even routine trips to the grocery store.

From what I understand it varies from state to state!
