The petanque players tried to help. They may have been more successful had their ammunition attained a higher velocity. The petanque balls are certainly big enough to do damage; "with a diameter between 70.5 and 80 mm (2.78 and 3.15 in) and a weight between 650 and 800 g (23 and 28 oz)" (Wikipedia).

I had to look up what Petanque was....
'they' (reporters? police? politicians?) don't think this incident was terrorist in nature
Well, then can we at least call it racism?
the attacker was not injured by police while being taken into custody
