CO: Armed passerby holds attacker with knife for police

Fountain, CO. This was back in August.
Man on bus pulls knife, attacks bus driver, grabs wheel and causes bus to crash. Busts out window of bus and attempts to flee but a passerby armed with a gun confronted him. Knife man drops his knife, police grab him when they show up.

So, once again, a legally armed citizen draws his gun and is not shot by the police when they arrive. Seems like a trend.

Funny, when I first read the subject I thought it would be a story about the passerby using a knife to hold the attacker.

No doubt the headline is ambiguous, as many headlines are. As a lawyer, I've spent a lot of time and effort so that my contracts could not be misunderstood. The complete realization of that goal remains aspirational.

Adjectives modify the nouns they are closest to.
“Armed” modifies “passerby”.
“With knife” modifies “attacker”.
“Armed passerby with knife” would mean the passerby had a knife. But he didn’t, the attacker did, so the attacker is “with knife.”

I've negotiated billions in commercial contracts. I agree with you about ridding documents of ambiguity being "aspirational" KLB.
