Computer languages come into favor, then drop away, so even if you learned to code, your chosen language could end up out of favor.
And of course H1B visas allow US tech companies to hire India Indians for a fraction of an American's wage. Those Indian universities keep pumping out grads with the latest skills.

There’s some history to that whole "learn to code" meme, predating the present difficulties being face by some journalists. Some years ago, it was suggested by the left-media (but I repeat myself) to laid-off blue collar factory workers whose jobs were disappearing overseas, that this would be a good time for a career change, and that they should learn to code. Apparently the Democrat Steno Pool (AKA “the media”) doesn’t consider that an offensive, and maybe even ridiculous suggestion.
