The US Navy vessels detailed above are only 331 tons, and are being used in the area of operations at the Straits of Hormuz.
Their draft is shallow enough that they can patrol in waters where large US Navy vessels can't go.

The US Coast Guard initially developed them, then the US Navy got some too.

I read elsewhere today that the MT Riah's manifest was only 6000 bbl of oil. Also, examination of her logs show that she hadn't put into a port in something like 6 months. All of her cargo was taken on and offloaded as ship-to-ship transfers. Highly suspect. The ship may actually have been operating in cooperation with Iran, rather than being a victim of Iran. I'll try and find the link I read earlier and post it here.

The depth is deep enough to float almost anything through but there are sections where it is critical to stay in the channel. My first westpac we transited the Strait of Hormuz from the Arabian Sea into the Persian gulf; man does it get narrow. Gave us all the willies. I was the master helmsman so it was stressful.

You could dredge more shipping channels but it would probably take months and a lot of resources.

I would hate to see Iran turned into a radioactive dump. The Iranian people are great people and are captive of a tyrannical government. If we do strike we need to hit the revolutionary guard and the mullahs.
