Hats off for this man. What an awesome legacy. Imagine being able to witness the advancements in aviation that he got to live through.

He was already a hero in WW2, before all the other stuff:
he totaled 12.5 aerial victories and shot down 13 German planes on 64 missions during World War II, "including five Me109s on 12 October and four FW 190s on 27 November,"

...″Little did I realize when I left this town to join the Army Air Corps in September 1941 ... that I would come back here to see a statue of myself in front of Hamlin High School, where I spent so many wicked days,″ said Yeager.
Its incredible that with all the danger he faced he lived to be 97.

Shot down over France, was hidden by the brave French, smuggled across the Spanish border, went right back to work shooting Nazis down over Europe.

Here he is with Barbara Eden.

I was actually watching a video yesterday of him... timely, though I didn't know of his passing until a few minutes ago.

RIP, Sir! :patriot:

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds,-and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of-wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor ever eagle flew-
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

This has been one of my favorite tweets about Gen. Yeager, which doesn't mention he was the first person to shoot down a jet. Gen. Yeager was a prolific Twitter user and reading his tweets about his life has been one of my favorites. See his tweet below the first one:
