My daughters haven't played any form of baseball/softball since they were 7 years old. But I still got them both Louisville Sluggers to take to college just in case they get bored and decide to join a team. Clubs are sometimes illegal, but sports equipment is generally OK.

They also both have several form factors of OC, and audible alarms for their key chains.

I also considered getting them an extra padlock with some 550 cord on it so it doesn't get lost. You never know when you'll need an extra lock ;-)

Point being that there are a lot of options out there other than a firearm.
