I would like to point out that remembering things differently some time after a deadly force encounter is all too common and not necessarily an indication someone is lying. It also points out another risk in talking too much, whether to a dispatcher or anyone else. (Note, I'm not saying you should remain mute to the first responding officer, but that's been covered extensively in other threads.)

I'd like to see those discussions. A LEO in my family told me in the case of shooting someone, give only your name and license #, nothing else. I guess multiple opinions exist, but I'm not saying squat until my lawyer says so.

Wow
If I am in my home, and hear gunshots outside my home, I am not going outside. Calling 911 and my gun closeby
Nintao wrote:To say something for police response time:

I live in a relativly quite middleclass neighborhood in NE Dallas and about 2-3 years ago I remember hearing gunshots close to the house early one evening.

What I gather happened (from a neighbor who witnessed this) someone shot a few rounds out of a moving vehicle into an open field (now occupied with homes and a school). A couple of men came from another house obviously to investigate and were running up and down the streets armed with rifles.

My mother (lives across the street from me) called 911 3 times minimum telling the operator that there were people running up and down the streets armed. I am sure others would have called as well. We did not see a police unit for 20 minutes and trust me we WERE on the look out. This was before I owned a firearm, but I would not have used it unless I personally or I saw someone else was in danger.

There was no "unmarked" or "plain-clothes" officers detected either. Perhaps they didn't want to "rush" into a potentialy deadly senario, but where was the protecting and serving? With this in mind I would be more apt to protect my neighbors knowing the poor response time [abbreviated profanity deleted] the police in the above senario. I cannot say I would have the same results of Mr Horn, but "Police are on the way" would not be a reasurance for me. I have lived on the same street my entire 31 years and have known some of my neighbors my entire life.

Or both charge, and the second turns away when the first shot goes off. Hardly blame joe horn for what was a 1/4 second decision on the 2nd burglar.

Is this true?
Sorry. I was half right. According to the Houston Barnacle:
Both men were shot once at a range of less than 15 feet with blasts from a 12-guage shotgun.

The neighbor fired twice. One shot struck one of the suspected burglars in the chest, and the other was struck on the side.

I have searched everywhere online. I cannot find any current status, when he goes before the GJ, etc.

The fact that they were both shot in the chest should give us some clues as to which way they were 'running'.

According to the Chronicle yesterday, 80% of respondents are in favor of Mr. Horn. Few people on this forum have not sided with Joe Horn. The issue here was Horn running his mouth. That is what made this national news, not that some old white man shot 2 black men.
at least IMHO

Curious, what country are you from?
Stupid wrote:In the culture I am from, vigilants (not sure the exactly same meaning) are highly praised and decorated by society and law enforcement. From our education since kindergarten, we have been taught to be brave and to stand up to the bad guys. In the country I am from, this guy would get a medal, seriously.

It is very unnatural for me to hear some American say "oh, they want to rob a gas station, none of my business." Well, I think mentality like this is the root cause of the high crime. The law, the media, the whole society discourage any heroic behavior and encourage the criminals, which is very disturbing. In my country, criminals, who have violated other people's rights first, get no right.

Since I cannot change the law here, I am going to do what DoubleActionCHL said "I'd rather put the money into defending this American than housing and feeding criminals."

I heard Michael Berry is starting a defense fund for Joe Horn. I intend to contribute. Anyone know the status of this?

Actually, not true. We know one of them had a large sack full of cash. He stole it from the house. The wonderful news here is 2 less burglars on the streets, and we don't have to pay for their jail time. Win/win, and good riddens to rubbish.
TxBlonde wrote:Some things of sentimental value can not replaced in anyway. We do not know what these BG's had stolen. There is always two sides to every story. And we will probably NEVER know the othere because they are DEAD.

At 3:28 and on he said they were on their way it did not say they were there.

I found it at http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?secti ... id=5538780. They were not there before that. Sounds like he went out the front door and shot them.

If I am going to go see which way they were going I am not going to outside with out my gun. And he did say in the begining they had a crowbar.

We all can sit here and say what we would do in a situation, but to be honest no one knows what they would do until they are faced with it.

And if the BG's were not found in the back or front yard of the house that was being robbed. That means they were still trying to get away after the guy shot them.

From a medical stand point if they would have not ran off they might have been able to saved. When you run, your heart beats faster then if you just layed there.

What if the guy that was being robbed did not have insurance? Some things can not replaced. We can analyze this till we all die.

You break in to my house you have just put me and my children's safety in danger. Oh by the way. People do not always need a weapon to kill somebody. Don't believe me talk to the people that have been choked to death with someone's bare hands. Oh yeah you can't they are dead.

IMO I am not going to wait till they have there hands around my throat or my childs before I shot them. The first movement you make towards me or my children, you will be leaving my house in a body bag. I would rather sit in prison and know my family is safe then wonder the What If's.

After hearing the 3 audio clips, my mind has not changed. The man certainly said stupid stuff. I'd let him walk in a heartbeat. I've got no sympathy for burglars. Personally I'd apply the death penalty to rapists, burglars, robbers, and child molesters. Oh, and traitors like Fonda.

Whoever guessed they were likely illegals?

Police have not found the families of the dead men. One had identification indicating he was from Puerto Rico, the other had documentation indicating he may have been from Puerto Rico, Colombia or the Dominican Republic, Corbett said.

I think this man is safe from a jury in TX. Most of us would want a neighbor to do the same for us. He would walk if I were on the jury.
