Ooooh! That BATFE letter just reminded me of why I have a major problem with that Agency. What in the Sam Peckinpah does Interstate or Foreign Commerce have to do with 2A gun rights? The Sarge wrote:I am sorry....I just could not let this go (for my own personal edification)......I found a guy asking the same thing of the BATFE and please find their response.

So I have no doubt...carrying a gun with a Utah CHL or no CHL in your car's glove box/center console or under the seat is a federal offense.
You must have a Texas CHL to do so in Texas.
Thanks guys for your input on the subject. This forum is a valuable asset for sure!

Just out of curiosity, why are you okay? Does the MPA grant you an exception or are we expecting the LEO to be understanding? The Sarge wrote:Well not really...we asked in class....and this was discussed in detail...if your carrying a Utah CHL and you are driving by a school your ok...if you stop in the parking lot your not OK....I have both my Texas and Utah....ELB wrote:There is one small catch. The federal Gun Free School Zone Act makes it a crime to have a gun within 1000 feet of an elementary or high school, unless you have a concealed handgun license issued by the state in which the school zone is located (or it is unloaded and locked up or you are a cop, etc). There have not been many prosecutions under this law, but there have been some. On a practical basis, the risk of being caught seems small, but it is something you may wish to consider. I don't worry about it much when I go to other states and drive around, but I like having my Tx CHL when I am repeatedly passing all the schools in my home area. Many here in Texas get Utah Non Res CHL's. ...
You infer if your just driving down a public road you have to stay a 1000' from the school and that is not accurate....as long as you are in your car and driving along your OK....
