I don't even understand why this is a problem with modern automobiles. When I exit my truck to fuel, the only door that unlocks is the drivers door. I believe most newer vehicles can be user programmed for what doors are locked/unlocked based on certain actions by the driver (gear selector moved from drive to park or how many times the unlock button is hit, etc.).
When I set the pump to start fueling I walk back and forth between the pump handle and the front of the truck observing my surroundings (out of boredom more than anything else). If I have to leave the truck for some reason, I hit the lock button on the remote locking the drivers door which would be the only door unlocked.
In most cases I think people become a target primarily because they made themselves a target by failing to do the most basic things to ensure their safety and security.
