I too am retired Air Force. First of all, there is no law about saying you are retired military even if you are not. As there is no law against claiming you served in a combat zone. If that were true, there would be some Hollywood types in prison right now. As for showing his ID Card, that is not true. When you left the service, the requirement to show your ID card went away. Of course you still need to show it on base at certain places. It has never been a rule that service people had to show their ID card on request to another service person.
