They didn't need probable cause for the rifles. They were sitting on the ground outside of the vehicle. The article doesn't say where the ID was found. The individual might have produced that ID when asked for identification.

So, you're saying that if I'm loading up for a trip, leave one of my rifle cases sitting on the ground next to my truck, go back inside for something, an officer drives by, and sees it sitting there that this gives him probable cause to search my vehicle and house?

Even if they were military style rifles, what law was being broken that gave them the right to enter the vehicle to do anything?
