I have friends who were surprised when the tax bill came and it was a lot higher than the 1% or so they paid in another state. Better for our Hoosier friend to know in advance.
Oh, I wasn't disagreeing with you at all. Preparanoid is the new word of the week in the forum. And you should absolutely have that information ahead of time. In fact, those figures were always disclosed to us in advance as part of the deal every time we bought a house. We have never been surprised.

juggernaut wrote:I don't know what taxes are like where you're from but you might be surprised how high Texas taxes are. The mortgage payments on a $200k house might be $12k to $15k per year, with property taxes adding another $4k to $6k per year, especially in the suburbs. Half that is usually ISD taxes in the suburbs and you said you don't have children yet, so you could be paying $20k in school taxes before your first child starts school. :eek6
I'm born and raised Texan but spent a few years in California. When all is said and done, what I saved in property taxes in California vs. Texas, I spent in State income tax. It was pretty much a wash....taxes are taxes and I either spent $4,000 in state income tax in CA or I now pay about the same in property taxes here.

Sure, but I wasn't recommending The Woodlands.

I'm something of an urban pioneer myself, and that southeast neighborhood seems like a good opportunity. I could be wrong. Don't sue me. ;-)

I'd never sue you! ;-)

Don't mean to be argumentative, but look at this map at 8 or 9 a.m. on a weekday. 288 is a parking lot.

No argument from me. It is a parking lot. Most of them are, but isn't it still closer than The Woodlands? I'm probably not a good one to give advise. I live in League City and drive 7 miles to work. I did my share of Houston freeway commuting in the late 70s and early 80s (before and after HOV lanes) and I'll never do it again if I can help it.

Re: Houston Neighborhoods

Don't do The Woodlands. It's nice up there, but the drive will kill you over time.

Some areas of Pearland are quite nice and you can drive up 288. Another benefit to living in Pearland is that it's close to the PSC gun range that's mentioned on here quite often.
